A bit of history

The Devon Rex, imp looking curly cat, was born in a farm in Devonshire. There, in 1960, Beryl Cox welcomed a wavy coated kitten she called Kirlee. A little later, Beryl discovered an article in the Daily Mirror explaining how breeders in Cornwall selected wavy coated cats called Cornish Rexes, after the county where they found Kallibunker, the first curly cat. She decided to contact them and gave them Kirlee for £25. Kirlee was bred with the cat from Cornwall but none of the kittens born from those matings were curly, because Kirlee carried a different mutation from that responsible for the Cornish Rex’s wavy coat. Hence, breeders decided to split the two lines and to officially give birth to a new breed, the Devon Rex.

Its look

The Devon Rex is a medium-sized cat with a wavy coat and a unique expression. His high cheek bones, his oval eyes and his very large ears make him look like a very special gremlin. His muzzle is short and well defined. From the side, the top of head is flat, followed by a rounded forehead and then by an important break at nose bridge. The neck is slender, the body is gracious yet firm and muscled with a broad, well-opened chest. His legs are high. The tail is long and covered with a short and wavy hair. Fine and soft, the fur is short with dense and untidy waves. Bald areas or parts covered with fine down are normal in kittens but are considered as a fault in adults. Whiskers are short and curly. All coat colours are accepted.

What kind of a companion is it?

Without being super active, the Devon Rex is a lively and impish cat requiring all its owners’ attention. In order to balance his tiny little voice, it uses many tricks to get the attention. Easy going, it gets along well with all the family members. Its short and wavy coat only requires moderate grooming.
